One of the benefits of our new apartment is that we finally have a backyard! It is small and the el train runs on the other side of the fence, but really any outdoor space is perfect for us. The apartment owner/downstairs neighbour loves to grow vegetables and herbs in one part of the backyard, so last weekend we were treated to some fresh kale, arugula, and swiss chard.
The Kale was delicious in some green smoothies, with a little left over to go in our pasta sauce a few days ago. The arugula was eaten with soft boiled eggs for a weekend breakfast and the swiss chard was used as part of a weekday brunch. As we missed most of the planting season this year, I have been thinking a lot about what vegetables I would like to grow next year.
Wednesday is my husband’s birthday. It is Wednesday morning as I write and I have still yet to wrap his gifts, after a quick dash to the store to buy the gift wrap that I had forgotten. In our birthday tradition of the birthday boy or girl being able to choose the meal for that evening, he has requested Smitten Kitchen’s Mushroom Lasagna to eat tonight. No cake, as he doesn’t trust my baking skills (or lack thereof) and rightly so.
Our new couch is finally being delivered this afternoon too, no more aching backs from sitting on the floor. I think that this evening’s agenda will likely involve staying in and watching a movie together.
