Pumpkin Carving

While Mikey’s Grandma, Granddad, Aunt, and Uncle were in Chicago visiting last week we made our annual trip to the farmer’s market to pick out our pumpkins for this year. Mikey has been looking forward to carving his pumpkin since his birthday at the end of September, asking me every day since then: “When can we get our pumpkins? When can we carve our pumpkins?”

Mikey has also been collecting gourds and miniature pumpkins to decorate our kitchen window, something that has become a little additional family tradition that we like to do every year when he accompanies me to the grocery store or to the market.

This year, Mikey was very excited that he would be able to carve his pumpkin by himself. In past years I have had him draw the design out, pull out the pumpkin seeds inside and then have cut the design myself using sharp knives. This year we used Pumpkin Masters’ Pumpkin Carving Kits to carve our pumpkins and Mikey was able to use the tools to do a lot of the carving himself on his own pumpkins, perfect for a little boy who is at that age where he just loves to be able to take charge!

We chatted and laughed together as we carved, sitting on newspaper in the middle of the kitchen floor, each of us fairly covered in pumpkin. Mikey carefully carving his pumpkin and me using the surface carving kit to decorate my own. The tools were much safer and easier for us to use than our normal kitchen knives and he particularly loved the creepy eyes included in the kid’s carving kit.

Mikey was so proud of his creations and has been so taken with the tools that enabled him to carve his own pumpkins, that he points them out to me whenever we pass the Halloween section in our local grocery or drugstore: “Look mummy, we have those! I made my pumpkin with those!” (Pumpkin Masters’ Pumpkin Carving Kits are also available nationally at Target and Walmart)

We had so much fun that we may end up having to buy even more pumpkins to decorate for our Thanksgiving table, after Halloween is over!

    • We hadn’t used them before, but will do every year from no on! Mikey had a blast being able to carve his own pumpkin 🙂

  1. This is so cool! I think I’m going to let Pookah carve one this year. Can’t wait! I’m off to Target to find one of these kits!

    • Mikey had so much fun and is so proud of his pumpkin creation, I bet Pookah would love it! The kids tools are great, no sharp edges to get cut on but they still do a great job on the pumpkins.

Love that photo of Mikey holding his pumpkin. The scroll work on that green pumpkin is just beautiful. Is it an easy tool to use?

    • Thanks Kristi! The tool I used for the green pumpkin is actually my favourite I think, super easy to use… it’s basically shaped like a razor with a choice of differently shaped blades for different effects. It’s from the Pumpkin Masters’ Surface Carving Kit.
