Thanksgiving with friends

We spent Thanksgiving at our neighbour’s house. We share a back porch, left our doors open and wandered back and forth with drinks and dishes of delicious food all afternoon as we were cooking, rushing as we braced ourselves for the brisk air between apartments. I made pecan-stuffed mushrooms as a starter, which were happily shared among neighbours and friends (and completely demolished by the time dinner rolled around).
Mikey made some little hand print turkeys, one for each guest. After they were assembled and had dried he put them one the table, one for each place setting. We turned on the solar powered Christmas lights that I bought for our back porch as it got dark, Mikey gazed over the railings at the colourful outdoor lights on a tree a few houses down the street from us, pointing and announcing “Christmas! Christmas Tree Lights!” He has been asking for us to put up our Christmas tree since then, although I usually like to avoid any indoor decorations until a little later into December. Perhaps next week we’ll venture a few blocks down to one of the local tree lots that has sprung up this past week and find ourselves a small, apartment-sized tree.
Thanksgiving evening was spent sharing wonderful food, swapping stories and enjoying spirited conversation. Drawn out into the early hours of Friday morning with after dinner strong coffee, finally dragging ourselves back to our own apartment and Mikey almost instantly falling asleep under a pile of blankets on the couch, as it was many many hours past his bedtime.
Filled with gratitude, that we have wonderful friends and neighbours and enough wonderful food to fill a table. That we have heat on these chilly nights and pretty lights to brighten up our porch. Thankful for love, fun, conversation and one another.

Don’t forget!
