Yellow [Shades of Autumn Photo Challenge]

I mentioned on the Bumbles & Light facebook page earlier this week that I was having trouble with the colour yellow. You can see above that a couple of these photos could have gone either with yellow or I could have saved them for next weeks colour, orange. Plus, I often find it difficult to photograph such vibrant colours without blowing the colour channel and losing detail, especially with reds and yellows. That’s all a part of the challenge though! It can be just as challenging for us, the hosts, to find these colours as it can be for everyone else and that’s ok! The idea of a colour challenge is that you’re encouraged and pressed into looking a little harder and noticing a little more. So if it’s difficult, then that might be a good thing because you’re paying extra attention to your surroundings than you usually would.

I’ve been taking my camera out with me on our little outings this week just in case I happen to come across the right colour. My parents are still visiting so we’ve been busy, out exploring almost every day. I spotted the leaves in the photos above while on a walk, little patches of yellow down pretty, tree-lined streets. The yellow flower was one of the last remaining in our local park, found while we were having a picnic earlier in the week.

In case you missed it, yesterday Alicia, Kristi and I shared some of our favourites from last week as well as sharing our new Shades of Autumn Pinterest board with you. We’d love it if you’d take a look!

I’m teaming up with the lovely and talented Kristi of Live and Love Out Loud and Alicia of Project Alicia for the Shades of Autumn Photo Challenge – a colorfully inspiring autumn photography challenge aimed at capturing the beautiful shades of autumn.

Just a few details:

All are welcome regardless of experience, time commitment and whether or not you’re experiencing fall at the moment.

Simply share your favorite images inspired by the autumn shade of the week each Friday and grab our button while you’re at it.

The linky will remain open from 12:01am CST Friday – 11:59pm CST Wednesday. Link directly to your Shades of Autumn blog post or Flickr photo. Feel free to share your photos in our Shades of Autumn Flickr Group as well.

We’ll select our favorite photos of the week and share them with you at Bumbles & Light, Project Alicia and Live and Love Out Loud the following Thursday.

Next week’s theme will be orange. For a complete list of upcoming themes, head on over to the Shades of Autumn Photo Challenge page. I’m so looking forward to seeing what you all come up with this week!

  1. Hi lovely host ladies! I got such enthusiastic responses to my green photos last week, I couldn’t wait to link up again (and the time zone means I’m first – how fabulous!) Yellow was tricky but once I started looking it popped up all over the place…

  2. Love you entire yellow series, I love how delicate the second shot is. All those leaves holding on for dear life.

  3. These are SO pretty!! I am especially drawn to that second one – even though there’s not a ton of yellow and the focus is quite different than your typical shot it’s so whimsical… love!

  4. You’re so right about the trickiness of yellow! The main picture I linked up with, might be called orange too. It was one of the first times I edited a picture, and suddenly I maybe didn’t have the best picture, but it made the same impression on me as the tree had done. I like your second shot a lot, it has a dreaminess (is that even a word?) in it that I just love!

  5. Oh, these are lovely! I particularly love the first one! Reds and yellows are hard for me to not blow out any channels, but for some reason I realize it more with red, so watch for it as I take the picture. With the yellows I don’t notice until I’m home and it is too late to take the picture correctly.

  6. So dainty – those first few photos…but incredibly vibrant. Love the understated quality of it…so moving!

  7. I love that flower shot! I had trouble too! I told Alicia that I contemplated reusing some of my yellow shots from the Summer challenge, but I knew she’d get on to me! Hee hee! =)
