Cold Winter

Is it only Wednesday?
This week is dragging it’s heels and we’re all very much looking forward to the long weekend that is coming up. Days just to spend time together, without worrying about anything else. Although I’m quite tempted to make an escape for some much needed retail therapy, a girl can always do with a new pair of shoes.
I never know whether it’s the lack of daylight, if it’s just that winter is harder for some reason, or if it’s a combination of the two – cold winter and the long nights, conspiring together like naughty children, but I never feel quite myself in the winter. Give me Spring or Autumn and I feel right at home. Winter though? I have to busy myself in order to make it through unscathed, keeping an eye to the window to catch snippets of good weather so that Mikey can play outside.

The photos in this post were taken as a part of my 365 project. Which, after a mere twelve days, is turning out to be more difficult than I imagined. I’ve kept at it though, I have only missed one day and I did take a photograph on that day but for whatever reason couldn’t get the NEF file off of my memory card. I’m ok with leaving the day blank, I know that I picked up my camera on that day and after all, this is a personal project.

I’ve been playing around quite a lot with speedlights, Mikey thinks the flash is funny but always closes his eyes. I suppose the dark days lend themselves well to trying out different lighting ideas. The photo above, the first photo in this post and the photo below were all taken using flash, bounced from the ceiling as I’ve yet to get around to buying myself a lighting umbrella (or whatever they are called).

Now, I suppose I should be busying myself with the things that I have to do around the house. Our downstairs neighbours moved out last weekend, so I get to play my music as loud as I like… I think I need that today.
The first photo in this post was chosen for Mortal Muses, Everyday Beauty on Sunday January 9th. You should go on over and have a look at their inspiring website.

I too feel the same way in the winter…I’m ready for warmer weather, boys playing outside, longer daylight, and much much more to do….

your self portrait is so cool, how did you do that?
Thanks!
I used a 50mm 1.4 lens. 1/40sec f/4.0. Used an external speedlight, bounced off of the ceiling above, I can’t remember the settings for that and my camera doesn’t save them with the rest of the exif. The flash was more for fill light than anything as it was light in the room anyway, just not light enough
I didn’t crop the photo, but it took a couple of goes to get it right as I was essentially just holding it above myself while laying down.

These photos are beautiful…as usual. Lighting umbrella…I don’t have one of those! Hmmm…wishlist?
It does seem like a long week. Doesn’t it seem colder now that all the snow is gone? There’s nothing to insulate the ground. I like winter at the beginning, but by mid-Jan, I’m totally over it.

Yeah, aside from that freak warm weather at the weekend it’s freezing now. Maybe when it’s snowy, the prettiness kind of makes up for the cold? Who knows!

I love these photos, especially your self portrait. Your freckles are absolutely beautiful. They remind me of summer. Boy do I wish it were nice and sunny right now.

I just love these photographs. The first one is my favourite, so very creative! Good luck with your attempt at a photo a day, not an easy task!
