Knitted Floor Cushion

This has taken me an unbelievable amount of time, I think I’ve probably been working on it since February or March. First of all, I started with only 2 balls of yarn because I bought them not really knowing what I was going to do with them. When I’d finished those, the local yarn store had run out of this particular colourway so I had to wait for them to get some more.

I kind of forgot about it for a while, then the yarn store got some new stock. But I worked on it slowly, only knitting when Mikey wanted to play on his own outside.

But now it’s finally finished! Knitting something as large as this is sort of a big deal for me, I don’t normally have the patience for overly long projects. I prefer something I can throw together in a weekend!

It’s based off of this pattern from Pickles, a website that I adore by the way. But I changed it up because I only needed something smaller. Instead of using 18 balls of yarn, mine only took 6 balls of bulky weight yarn and 8mm straight needles.

I cast on 50 stitches and knitted a rectangle in garter stitch (knit both sides) using up almost all of the 6 balls of yarn, saving some to pull it together. Because mine is not as chunky as the one from Pickles, when I stuffed it, I needed to have some fabric over the stuffing so that it didn’t show through the stitches. I used a pillow to stuff it and a cheap IKEA pillow case in a slightly darker colour to line it. I followed the instructions from Pickles in order to put it together, and there you have it! A cute little floor cushion!

We also bought an electric piano this weekend. We both wanted a real piano, but because we move every 3 years or so it just isn’t particularly practical to have a real one. maybe one day. We have been talking about buying one pretty much since Mikey was born, because we’d like him to grow up with one. We spent the rest of the weekend banging out classical tunes, with Mikey sitting next to us “helping”. He loves the piano and I’ve been trying to teach him to count and play 1, 2, 3, (C, D, E). My husband and I used to play when we were children, although I’ve mostly forgotten and need to learn a whole lot again. I was surprised to find that I haven’t forgotten how to read music, so I suppose that’s a start, now to re-learn some music.

Mikey now has a “music box” sitting next to the piano, with xylophones, shakers, tambourines and things like that in it and his little guitar resting nearby. He loves to dance while using the shakers and he sings along to the piano. He will sit on one of his little chairs with his guitar, copying daddy, strumming the guitar and singing along. Although we’re not really sure exactly what he’s singing, he can keep in tune surprisingly well!

How do you feel about having a lot of music and musical instruments around? We’re trying our hardest not to be pushy about it with Mikey, after all he’s only 2 and a half! But he does love to do whatever mummy and daddy are doing, so he is very interested in the instruments, dancing and singing because daddy plays guitar and mummy dances around with the radio on, singing along to the music. Plus, you know little kids love to make as much noise as possible!

  5. That’s so cool! You did such a lovely job on it. I want to learn how to knit that now. I just recently started teaching myself how to crochet using plarn. I still have yet to finish my first project, but now I know that it’s something I would like to pursue.

    SITS visiting today, peace. 🙂
